Discernment Counseling

Is Discernment Counseling Right for Us?

Discernment counseling is a type of brief couples therapy. It is helpful for:

  • Couples Who Are Not Sure if They Want to Stay in the Relationship.
  • Couples Where One Partner Wants to Stay in the Relationship and One Partner Leans Toward Ending the Relationship.

Discernment counseling helps you decide between three options: ending the relationship, committing to 6 months of couples therapy, or postponing a decision. The goal is for the couple to understand what went wrong in the relationship and to feel comfortable in the path they choose going forward.

Typically, there are between one and five sessions, including a combination of individual and joint sessions. A significant focus is understanding if there are any problems that can be solved and if there are potential solutions to the relationship issues.

Two people sit side by side on a swing by the beach at sunset, facing the ocean with the sunlight creating a soft glow around them.
A couple sits close together on a couch, holding hands, while another person holding a clipboard with a pen sits across from them, seemingly in a consultation setting.

Gain Clarity and Confidence

Ultimately, the couple can make the decision regarding their future with more confidence and understanding. If they decide to pursue couples therapy, they often have more hope and commitment to the process because they did discernment counseling first.
